'Win'less prez ripped by GOPers

President Obama's decision to avoid using words such as "win" in his speech on Afghanistan came under fire from veteran GOP presidential speechwriters yesterday.

Matt Latimer, a former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, scoffed at Obama's verbal dithering.

"He might as well have said, 'Conclude the conflict with a resolution that will prove satisfactory to our position,'" Latimer said.

"From Churchill on down, everyone has made an emphasis on 'We're going to win' [in wartime speeches]. He didn't even say we're going to triumph."

"Win" was MIA from the 4,581-word address.

"His whole language is the language of someone who is not comfortable with this challenge," said Clark Judge, a speechwriter for President Ronald Reagan.

By skipping terms such as "win" and "victory" in a speech that pledges armed-service men and women to combat, Obama is trying to placate the lefty members of his own party who are convinced the war in unwinnable, said Judge.

Stuart Gottlieb, a former Senate foreign-policy adviser, said he was surprised not to hear specifics about what victory would mean.

"He left it like, we're going to push back the Taliban and not necessarily defeat them. What does pushing them back look like? It's still to be determined," said Gottlieb.

s hartzog - No I would not want you for a caddy either. First off, I walk a golf course when I can. Second, you seem to be mean spirited and angry at the world. I would not want to spend 4 hours with you anywhere, much less on a golf course.

I have changed ID's, but only use one at a time. The point I was trying to make was people like you and I may have different perspectives on a particular issue but that is what makes sharing information interesting. Good luck in May. Hit them straight and long.

Jeebus_Cripes - Sutton542 can not be the same person as s hartzog. Sutton542 has writing skills that far exceed s hartzog. Second, anyone that has played Troon North must be an OK guy. (Sutton542 - Troon has a special 275 for two rounds. WOW. expires 12/25/09). Third, s hartzog seems like the guy you don't have keep score. If you know what I mean.

Great editiorial, Jennifer. Didn't that teach you anything about 'balance' in jouralism school? I learned it in 8th grade.

It's just amazing how dense most of you are. We heard "we will win win win" for 7 years and guess what? we lost lost lost.

And Obama crushes dissent and fosters newspeak? What about the Bush admins redefinition of "torture", the outing of Plame in retributuion for (gasp) criticism, the howls of Traitor and "Throw them in Guantanomo' to any one who dared question the Dictator Bush? What about the Repub congress threatening to eliminate the filibuster if the Dems dared invoke it? You want more?
