Laurence Fishburne will replace William Petersen on "CSI," CBS confirmed yesterday.

Reports that CBS would tap Fishburne have been floating around for weeks. Last week, the trades reported that negotiations between Fishburne and CBS were heating up.

Fishburne, currently on Broadway in the one-man show "Thurgood," will join the show in the upcoming season's ninth episode, playing "a former pathologist who is now working as an itinerant college lecturer," according to CBS.

Fishburne's character (no name yet) will study how and why people commit violent crimes--tendencies he sees within himself, which lends a disturbing touch to his character.

John Malkovich also was reportedly approached to replace Petersen--whose Gil Grissom is expected to return from time to time (Petersen is a "CSI" executive producer).
