SAVED BY THE 'L'

'APHRODITE! There appears to be no end to the number of times she can demonstrate her ability to destroy a powerful man in an instant!"

This is the Miss Manners columnist Judith Martin describing the goddess of love as one of the world's most powerful forces.

ELIZABETH BERKLEY is the girl Hollywood did wrong. Well known as a TV star on "Saved by the Bell," she suddenly became an acting pariah after appearing in one of her first movies, 1995's "Showgirls," which, for some reason was not only a big fat flop, but everybody connected with it got blamed for its being one. (Of course, Elizabeth had nothing to do with that one way or another; she was hired to do a job, and she did it, as the Joe Eszterhas script and director Paul Verhoeven indicated.) But she's worked hard since then to come back - and she has!

And now, in what is perhaps a sly nod to the Sapphic innuendoes of "Showgirls," Elizabeth is set to guest star on the sixth and final season of Showtime's groundbreaking, provocative series "The L Word," scheduled to premiere early in 2009.

Elizabeth will appear in four of the eight episodes now filming in Vancouver. This will re-team her with her pal, "The L Word" star Jennifer Beals. They worked together on the little indie movie "Roger Dodger" back in 2002.

PEOPLE ARE talking about the com ing Therese Walsh novel "Un bounded," which Elisabeth Weed at Weed Literary is sitting on with all her might and main, hoping that the entire plot, etc., doesn't leak before Shaye Areheart Books publishes in the fall of 2009.

This one tells of a language professor whose grief over the loss of her twin has isolated her from friends and family. She impulsively buys a keris - a Javanese weapon imbued with legendary powers. She embarks then on a trip, New York to Rome, to follow the dagger's provenance. Will this lead her to the truth of her sister's tragedy?

Evidently, "Unbounded" was good enough for the author to nail down a major two-book deal.

SOME FUN at Michael's watering hole when Parade's relatively new editor, Janice Kaplan, celebrated kicking off yet another mystery thriller, starring her dreamed-up character Lacy Fields.

Condé Nast, so proud of Parade's remaining the No. 1 read in print periodicals, turned out quite a group to lift a glass for Janice (who won her stripes with TV Guide).
